Keratosis pilaris resembles raw chicken skin |
"Chicken skin" is termed medically as keratosis pilaris. It is a hereditary skin condition wherein the keratin, which is the outer layer of skin accumulates and blocks the hair follicles. As a result, many small horny bumps that resembles chicken skin or goosebumps appear on skin usually on the upper and outer parts of the arms, thighs and less commonly on the trunk and face.
It may also be itchy at times. It may be unsightly but it is a harmless skin condition and not infectious.
While there is no known cure for keratosis pilaris, there are instances that it resolves spontaneously after being there on the skin for quite sometime. But it recurs once dryness of the skin sets in again. Keeping skin moisturized can alleviate the symptoms.
Here are some tips to prevent skin dryness:
- Use only mild soap.
- Apply moisturizers ( lotion). It is best to apply lotion every after bath to replenish skin's lost moisture and for better absorption.
